America's White Table Hardcover – Picture Book, May 1, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
It was just a little white table...
The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit. As a special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance of each item placed on the table, Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle, and each member of the Armed Forces and their families, may be called to give.
It was just a little white table... but it felt as big as America when we helped Mama put each item on it and she told us why it was so important. "We use a Small Table, girls," she explained first, "to show one soldier's lonely battle against many. We cover it with a White Cloth to honor a soldier's pure heart when he answers his country's call to duty." "We place a Lemon Slice and Grains of Salt on a plate to show a captive soldier's bitter fate and the tears of families waiting for loved ones to return," she continued." We push an Empty Chair to the table for the missing soldiers who are not here..."

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2019I ordered this book for a teacher who still reads to her 4th grade class. Since the school cancelled its Veteran's Day program, she wanted the kids to at least be aware of the importance of recognizing our veterans and the significance of the day. I was unaware of this tradition and glad I was able to least bring a little bit of acknowledgment to why the day is celebrated. Hopefully, the kids will now know why too!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2023Written for younger audiences but suitable for all adults. For those who have no military experience is a good reference.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2023I love this book about remembering our POW’s who did not come home from wars. As a member of the American Legion Auxilliary it is important young children understand what occurs when one is lost or missing. Beautifully written and illustrated. Presented a copy to our local library
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2013This book was written for families with POWs and/or MIAs, but also works for anyone with a loved one serving overseas. It's a tradition celebrated on Veteran's Day. I purchased this book to use for a Children's Story for the Church of the Brethren. As our church believes in Negotiation over Aggression, I needed to modify the symbols, leaving out the lemon, for instance, to make it fit for all the loved ones we've lost over the years. (And I used it as a reference, rather than read it to a group of wiggly kids.) It's a very moving book.
